How Texas Hold'em Poker Started
Texas Hold'em Poker is one of the really popular card games today. Are you wondering where and when it began? We'll go through the beginnings of this popular kind of poker game.
Texas Hold'em Poker was introduced by a group of Texan gamblers in Las Vegas, this group includes Amarillo Slim, Doyle Brunson, and Crandell Addington. Later on, bookmakers Liam "The Gentleman" Flood and Terry Rogers introduced it in Europe.
Downtown Las Vegas, at the Golden Nugget Casino -- this is the place where Texas Hold'em Poker was first played in the year 1967. Back then this was the only casino that offers Texas Hold'em Poker in Las Vegas -- this went on for several years. Unfortunately they didn't seem to attract potential patrons. Perhaps this was due to problems with the location. So professional poker players decided to relocate to more prominent locations.
The next scene is at the Las Vegas Strip at the entrance of the Dunes Casino. The Las Vegas professionals were invited to play Texas Hold'em Poker in the year 1969. Professional poker players achieved a certain degree of success in the form of great winnings.
In 1969, Tom Moore lunched the Second Annual Gambling Fraternity Convention adding with it the first-ever poker tournament. The tournament featured several games including Texas Hold'em Poker. Jack and Ben Binion moved the location to their own casino after acquiring the rights to the said convention. It was then placed in the gambling capital of Las Vegas and was renamed as the World Series of Poker.
After a year of World Series of Poker. Tom Thackrey, a journalist, suggested to have remove the previous limits imposed on Texas Hold'em Poker and that it should be the main event of the tournament. Benny and Jack Binion agreed to it.
Ever since the lifting of the aforementioned limits at playing Texas Hold'em Poker the game has continued to be played as a main event. The number of players continued to grow. In 1972 the number of entrants were only 8; this grew up to over 100 entrants in 1982; and in 1991 it reached over 200 entrants.
Books about poker began to be published; Doyle Brunson authored one of them. The title of his book was "How I Made over $ 1,000,000 Playing Poker". At times it would be published as "Doyle Brunson's Super System". This revolutionized the way poker was played and one of the first books to discuss Texas Hold'em Poker.
The number of Texas Hold'em Poker players grew bigger in Nevada. In the 1980s the interest outside of Nevada began to grow too. In contrast, Texas Hold'em Poker was made illegal in California and was classified as an unknown game. However, Texas Hold'em Poker was declared legal only in 1988 and almost immediately card rooms offered Texas Hold'em across the state.
Texas Hold'em Poker went through some hard times, but became gradually accepted and has took the lime light. It turned out to be one of the most popular card games around.
